Tibetan Music and Peace Lecture

Redding, CA — Shasta College is pleased to present guest lecturer and musician Tenzing Tsewang, of Tibet and Australia, and Lobsang Samten, Spiritual Director.  Two unique events are planned for Thursday, November 11, 2004, at the college’s main campus in Redding.  The first features Tenzing Tsewang, at 11:00 a.m., in Room 638, who will present a recital and interactive lecture.  Tenzing’s music is grounded in an extraordinary diversity of life experiences.  He was born into a family of Tibetan nomads, and his childhood was spent amongst the vast desert plains of the Tibet-Himalayan highlands.  Forced to flee their beloved homeland after the Chinese Communist invasion, Tenzing’s village members walked over high mountain passes to Nepal, only to be met with the disease and suffering of Katmandu refugee camps.  Tenzing lived in exile in India where he received an intensive education, and he moved to Australia in 1979.  Today, Tenzing is a well-known artist with a unique mix of musical and spiritual performances.

The second event is guest lecturer Lobsang Samten, at 12:30 p.m., in Room 802, who will present a lecture titled, “Peace, Beginning with You.”   Lobsang returns to the college for the second time; in 2001, Lobsang created a sand mandala, and lectured.  During his last visit, Lobsang described his role in the making of the Martin Scorsese film Kundun, where he was the spiritual director of the film and an actor portraying his real-life role as personal assistant to His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet.  Born in Ribuce Chang, Tibet in 1953, Lobsang escaped to India in 1959 and completed his education there at Namgyal Monastery in Dharamsala, where he earned the degree of Master of Sutra and Tantra, equivalent to a Western doctoral degree.  He is currently the founder and spiritual director of the Tibetan Buddhist Centers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Hartford, Connecticut; and El Paso, Texas.
