Welcome Center

Activities and Events
Shasta College has many events during the course of the school year. The Dean of Students and Support Program is responsible for events and activities such as the Welcome Booth,  Eighth Graders’ Career Day, Graduation, Welcome Day, Junior Day, and assists in many other campus events. For more information regarding events, please call the office.

Student Senate (Associated Student Body)
The Shasta College Student Senate (SCSS) represents the students as they provide a voice in shared governance, allow student input and participation in the affairs and activities of Shasta College as provided by the California State Education Code. SCSS functions for the good of the students in promoting concerns and policies pertaining to the students and encouraging student development and leadership.

Campus Welcome Center
The Welcome Center is located in the 2300 Building, room 2308, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Its function is to serve as a centralized area that provides information, answers questions of a general nature, refers specific questions to the appropriate departments or centers, and helps those who come to the campus seeking directions to locations or activities. The Information Center houses the only official lost and found on the campus.

Campus Lost and Found
The Dean of Students and Support Programs houses the campus lost and found. All items that are turned in to this operation are tagged, inventoried, and secured in locked cabinets. If an item has identification with it, staff will try to contact the owner to let them know their lost item has been found. Staff or students who have lost items can visit lost and found and fill out a lost property report to ensure that if their item is found, it will get back to them as quickly as possible. Items that are turned in to lost and found are cross-checked against lost reports right away, in an effort to identify the owner. We need your help to make this operation a successful one. If items are turned in to your department or center, please make certain you contact us so arrangements can be made to have these items picked up or delivered to us.

Residence Halls
Shasta College maintains two on-campus residence halls, one for men and one for women. Tehama Hall is the men’s dorm and Trinity Hall is the women’s dorm and they can house 60 residents each. Expected living standards are required of students living in the residence halls. The Dean of Students and Support Programs ensures that these living standards are maintained at all times and is directly responsible for the smooth operation and supervision of this on-campus living community. Questions or concerns about Residence Halls should be directed to the Dean of Students, Dr. Keith Brookshaw at 225-4822.

Student Discipline
The Dean of Students and Support Programs handles all issues relating to student discipline. Shasta College has an adopted Student Code of Conduct (Board Policy) that details student rules and regulations. If infractions to this policy occur, the student is called in for an official documented hearing, which may result in disciplinary sanctions being taken against the student.

Student Recruitment
Getting the word out about Shasta College is an important "first step" in recruiting. An informed student allows that student to be selective in choosing where they will continue their academic pursuit, and we want them to choose Shasta College.

Student recruitment goes much further, however, it is how students are treated when they make their first contact with Shasta College that can determine, too, whether this is a place they would like to attend or not. The Dean of Students and Support Programs' office operates a "Welcome Center" that helps to ensure that students are made to feel welcome and treated courteously. The goal of the welcome center staff, whether students visit in person or telephone, is to take the time to listen to their questions or concerns, to help them or refer them to someone who can help them. This operation puts together recruitment packets for first time students, arranges for campus tours, assists in distributing schedules and catalogs to potential students, and is responsible for the campus lost and found.

The Student Press    Back to Top

Working With Student Reporters

The student newspaper is called The Lance. It can be enormously effective in communicating with students and staff. It is also important to know that while it is a campus publication, the newspaper is also sent to all local media outlets; in several cases, stories in the student press have provided leads for local reporters.

Give student reporters the same respect you would give to the media. If they need more time to understand a story, do your best to give that story to them. If you find a student reporter who seems determined to write a story you think is unfair, an explanatory call from you to the editor may help.
