ECE 22: Infant/Toddler Curriculum

The most important toy or activity for infants and toddlers is us: mommies, daddies, and caregivers.

Among other topics, we will spend time in ECE 22 learning how to choose developmentally appropriate activities and toys for infants and toddlers. An excellent article on play,  The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development
and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bonds
, is available online. This is a scholarly article, but well worth the time to study.

For all children under the age of seven, play is learning and learning is playing. Many parents are struggling with the bombardment of teaching "academics" to their infants and toddlers. As child development professionals, we have a responsibility to assist and educate parents in the importance of play. A beautiful article, Play: It's the Way Young Children Learn, is available as a handout for parents. There is additional comprehensive information on play and learning at the Action Alliance for Children. Their information is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

There are also many excellent free resources at the Zero to Three website. After you register, be sure to explore all the pamphlets and ideas in the Play section. Because we will be discussing the slide shows on this web page in class, you may want to print them for your notes.

The handouts below are assignments and ideas you may find helpful for our class:
