The Handout Packet is required for ECE 12. For those of you who want to download the complete Handout Packet, it is available here in PDF format. This file is very large (8MB) so it will take a long time to download on a dial-up connection. You have the option of purchasing it in the bookstore.

ECE 12    Fall, 2008, Handout Packet

The following links are supplemental materials that will be of interest to curious learners. They are organized in the order of class presentations:

  • Professionalism:
Accreditation and Accreditation Overview from the NAEYC website

  • Health and Safety: I have included web sites with information on the dangerous infection, MRSA: Shasta County Department for Public Health has prepared a MRSA Fact Sheet, and the Center for Disease Control has general information. You can avoid this disease with scrupulous hand washing.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention also provides many growth charts for infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents. Of particular interest are the height for weight charts for infant boys and infant girls. Height for weight charts are an excellent indicator of excessive weight gain or loss in a young child. These charts are also available in Spanish and French.

Parents and adults who care about children are rightfully concerned about autism, a serious developmental disorder. The causes of autism are unknown at this time, but researchers now know that IMMUNIZATIONS DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention also has excellent information at their Autism Information Center. You may want to give parents a copy of the excellent review of the research on immunizations and autism; this handout may help parents and caring adults decide to protect their children with vaccinations.

  • Brain Development

  • Attachment and Observation

  • Developmental Theory, including physical, social, emotional, language, and cognitive development.

  • Working with Parents
    The Three-Step Process:
Self-awareness: Being aware of your own beliefs and attitudes and how they affect your work.
Careful Observation: Seeking to understand the other person; the meaning behind their words and actions, their beliefs, attitudes and expectation.
Flexible Response: Using what you know about yourself and others to respond in the most sensitive and effective way.

Berry Brazelton, MD, has identified 11 Touch Points: periods of development in an infant when parents are particularly prepared to learn new information about their baby. These 11 periods are pregnancy, newborn to 3 weeks old, 6 - 8 weeks,  4 months, 7 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, and 36 months.
