Rudolf Dreikurs (author of Children: the Challenge)
studied human behavior with Alfred Adler, then developed the Goals of
Misbehavior. This is the behavior management method we discuss in class.
WicEd presents
reliable information on
Dreikurs and the
Goals of Misbehavior. Usually, I am cautious in linking students with
information from Wikipedia or similar websites because the information can
be written or edited by almost anyone. But this article on Dreikurs appears
accurate, so I am comfortable recommending it to you (for now).
- This website also includes Rudolf Dreikurs'
endearing poem, "If
A Child..." I recommend this poem to all adults working with young
children.
- From Dreikurs' and Adler's work, Donald Dinkmeyer
wrote a readable parenting book, Systematic Training for Effective
Parenting (this is out of print, but it might be available through
various used book dealers). The
Positive Discipline program provides a summary of Dinkmeyer's work
(which is similar to the Dreikurs information above). A chart
summarizing
Dinkmeyer's principles is also available online.
- The National Association for the Education of
Young Children (NAEYC) has extensive handouts and information on many
topics, including
discipline and guidance for young children. When you visit their
website, choose the topic at the bottom of this site. These articles are
excellent resources for parents AND professionals.
- The Program for
Infant/Toddler Caregivers has many helpful resources in their
library. In particular, "Toward
a Better Understanding of Children's Behavior" has fine information
and suggestions that are useful to all professionals in early childhood.
Another download available from PITC is an excerpt from
The Magic Years, written by my favorite infant expert, Selma
Fraiberg. Another resource is the summary, "Prevention:
To Promote The Optimal Social Development of All Children."
- Continue your exploration of
Zero to Three,
NAEYC, and the
PITC websites for many items on
guidance and discipline.
- "Parenting
Tools" is just that: a list of tools for adults to try in managing
behavior of young children.
- Regulatory Disorder, or Sensory Integration
Disorder is often misunderstood and confused with behavior problems in
children. We will discuss these topics in class, but the scholarly
article,
Regulation Disorders of
Sensory Processing in Infants and Young Children is available
online.
