Attachment & Observation

  • Several students have expressed some difficulty in finding a child under age two to observe for this assignment. I have video which you may borrow for your observation assignment. Please ask me if you need this.

  • Sample Observation in a Child Care Center, or what not to do when offering child care to infants and toddlers.

  • The Child Trauma Academy, a web site of Dr. Bruce Perry's materials, has many excellent resources on attachment and brain development, including Bonding and Attachment in Maltreated Children in English and Spanish.

  • The Program for Infant Toddler Care has many resources on attachment in the first three years of life, as well as other topics. Try their Search for PITC Resources

  • A scholarly article on Attachment by Peter Fonagy, PhD, is available at the Dallas Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology  web site. Although the article is lengthy and complex, the information is most worthwhile.

  • Harry F. Harlow conducted experiments on rhesus monkeys. These sad experiments contributed to our understanding of attachment. In 1958, he wrote about his experiments in a scholarly paper found at the Classics in the History of Psychology web site. This paper will be especially valuable to students who would like to learn more about Harlow's research.
