The
Shasta College Farm offers students an excellent opportunity to get
practical, hands-on learning experience. Most of the
agriculture, natural resources, and horticulture classes have
laboratory requirements that use the farm. During the labs,
students are able to get involved in all aspects of the farm.
Planting, harvesting, building fences, feeding and care of livestock,
operating and maintaining equipment, and plant and soil experiments
are all activities that students will experience during lab exercises.
The Farm
consists of 100 acres of farmable ground, permanent pastures, living
fences, ponds, abundant wildlife, and is bordered by large oak trees
and Stillwater Creek. The farm is intermixed with numerous
cattle, sheep, hogs, goats and chickens. The farm also has a 360
acre range that offers winter grazing land for cattle, plentiful
habitat for wildlife, and a large fish pond.
Nine students each year are involved in a Farm Management Experience class
and are able to have the opportunity to live in the Farm Dorm. The
students work fourteen hours a week in exchange for their rent. All
aspects of farm management are practiced on a daily basis within the
program.
Overall, the Shasta College Farm is an
excellent place for students excited about learning all aspects of
production agriculture, natural resources, horticulture, environmental
technology, and farm management experience. All students
participating in agriculture, natural resources, and horticulture lab
classes have the opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the
classroom into practical skills on a working farm setting.
