Courses
in heavy-duty diesel mechanics are designed to give the student
entry-level job skills. The skills obtained at Shasta College
will enable a student to enter the heavy duty diesel mechanics
trade.
Instruction
is given in the following areas: Diesel Fuel Systems and Tune-up
Procedures, Diesel Engine Rebuild, Heavy Duty Power Train, Heavy
Duty Chassis, Heavy Duty Equipment Repair Vehicle Electric Systems,
Air Brakes, Hydraulics, and Fuel Systems.
Heavy-duty
diesel mechanics can expect to work outdoors as much as indoors.
A heavy duty diesel mechanic should also expect to buy his own hand
tools since the employer usually does not supply these items.
The heavy duty diesel mechanic works on every type of equipment –
from automobiles to large trucks and tractors.
The
Diesel Technology Program prepares a student for entry into the
heavy duty diesel mechanics trade. Award of specific
apprenticeship credit will depend on the employer and the local
union regulations, but the graduate usually will receive credit for
practical fulfillment of apprenticeship requirements.
This
two-year program will give you your start in the heavy duty diesel
mechanics trade.
Training
will develop your skills in diesel engine, electrical repair, and
power training.
Other
courses in the program teach you how to operate diagnostic
equipment, repair and rebuild brake systems, repair transmissions,
repair and adjust hydraulics, and computer-controlled systems.
