Shasta College Policy for Credit through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Upon completion of six semester units at Shasta College, a student may submit official College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test results to Shasta College as developed and administered by the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). Contact the CEEB for a testing center location (Shasta College is not a testing center). CEEB established the program to serve students who have a college-level education developed outside of the classroom (i.e. military experience/training). The following restrictions apply:
o Up to 30 semester units may be applied toward an Associate degree. For the General Examinations, a score of 500 or better will earn credit. Except for the Subject Examinations noted below, a scale score of 50 or higher will earn credit for a subject exam.
o Grades and grade points will not be assigned to CLEP units.
o Units awarded through CLEP will not count toward the 12-unit residency requirement of Shasta College.
o CLEP-awarded units for satisfactory completion of General Examinations will post as electives, except as noted below.
o Where considered by the appropriate department and division, CLEP General Examinations may satisfy specific courses or a specific course’s pre-requisites. Contact the appropriate department or division center to determine which, if any, of the examinations may satisfy specific courses or course pre-requisites. Minimum scores for Shasta College course equivalencies, where established, may be obtained from Admissions and Records.
o Shasta College may offer credit for Subject Examinations (beyond those listed below) as determined by the appropriate department or division center. Contact the appropriate department or division center to determine which, if any, of the Subject Examinations are accepted. Minimum scores for Shasta College course equivalencies, where established, may be obtained from Admissions and Records.
o Shasta College will grant credit for the following CLEP Subject Examinations in accordance with a CSU system-wide policy:
Algebra and Trigonometry (Passing Score: 49) 3 semester units
Calculus and Elementary Functions (Passing Score: 51) 3 semester units
General Chemistry (Passing Score: 48) 3 semester units

The CSU Schools in northern California and CLEP
Ø HSU is currently considering expansion of the CLEP program and they are leaving subject examinations up to department faculty. It was described to me as a “low priority” for their Academic Senate and that few requests occur annually for CLEP (on the order of less than 5)
Ø CSU Chico accepts test results from 5 General Examinations and 29 Subject Examinations. They limit at 30 semester units and include a residence disclaimer like that above. See back page (available at the meeting)..
Ø Sacramento State follows the CSU system-wide policy and restricts semester units to the three subject exams noted above. See back page (available at the meeting).
Ø Sonoma State accepts up to 30 units including 19 Subject Examinations, some of which include GE satisfaction. See back page (available at the meeting).
