Internship in Science Teaching (NSCI 489A)

Course Description
Students have the opportunity to work with elementary and middle school students in a science teaching/learning environment in the hands-on Science Education Laboratory facility on campus. The hands-on lessons provide early teaching experience in science for undergraduates exploring teaching as a career. All lessons are based on the California content standards in science. Students cover instructional strategies as well as content as part of the one-hour teaching and two-hour follow-up laboratory experience.

Lab Schedule

Welcome to our Hands-On Science Lab

Classroom Field Trips to the Hands-On Science Lab are designed with a special focus on 4th - 6th grade science standards.

The lab experiences are fun and engaging, active-learning experiments in chemistry, biology, and physical science. They are offered by university students studying science and education and are held in an actual laboratory on the Shasta College campus.

Labs last 90 minutes and are offered on Friday at 8:30 am-10:00 am. The cost is $30 per class . Maximum class size is 36 students.

Magnetism (Designed for 4th Grade)

The Magnetism lab will help your class discover the exciting properties and uses of magnets! At the Hands-on Science Lab for Magnetism, your class will experience rich curriculum that is based on the 4th grade California Science Standards. Each of the six stations offers your student the opportunity to manipulate magnets in a guided lesson in a small group situation. To view available times and to register, click here.

Electricity (Designed for 4th Grade)

Static electricity is an electrical charge on the surface of an object. Current electricity is a flow of negative charges through a conductor in a closed circuit. Some materials make good conductors and others make good insulators. Come to the Hands-on Science Lab for six exciting lab stations based on the 4th grade California Science Standards. Water (Designed for 5th Grade)

The Water Lab will help your class discover the exciting properties of water. Water can exist in all three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. The lab moves through the water cycle between evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Water is a polar molecule that sticks to itself (cohesion) and sticks to other substances (adhesion). Experience all of these important properties of water at the exciting Hands-on Science Lab based on 5th grade California Science Standards. To view available times and to register, click here
