PRIORITY REGISTRATION:

bulletIt is sometimes critical that students with disabilities enroll in a particular section of a class (to insure access to a classroom, ordering appropriate texts on tape, etc.).   DRC offers priority registration to those students who qualify which enables students to be in the first group to finalize registration.

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS:

bulletScribes: Scribes (writers) are provided to students requiring assistance in producing written material.  Scribes write down material dictated by students for examinations, research/term papers, and any other required writing assignments.
bulletLab Assistants: Lab Assistants perform the physical manipulation required for laboratory procedures, under the direction of the student with a disability.
bulletResearch Assistants: Research assistants will help students do required research and gather material under the direction of the student.
bulletTutors: Tutors provide specialized tutoring which is individualized and usually one-on-one with presentation methods or materials used, adapted to mitigate the limiting effects of the student's disability.
bulletNote takers: Note takers provide notes to students who have a disability limiting their ability to take in-class notes.  The Learning Services Office usually recruits note takers from students who are enrolled in the class in which the service is needed.

READER SERVICES:

bulletReader services are provided for students who cannot access regular printed text, whether the disability is the result of a visual impairment, other physical disability, or reading disability.
bulletTextbooks on tape:  Many textbooks are available on tape through the Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic RFB&D.  If not available through RFB&D, readers will be hired.
bulletThe Assistive Technology Lab has equipment that scans print electronically and converts it to voice.
bulletReaders are also provided during examinations.
bulletPrint enlargement and text copy to colored paper are services available as well.

INTERPRETING SERVICES FOR DEAF STUDENTS:

bulletStudents who are deaf are encouraged to coordinate their classes and educational plans with the Disability Resource Center.  Interpreters are available to students who require this service in order to gain access to the rich curricula here at Shasta College

COMPUTERS AND OTHER SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT:

bulletThe Assistive Technology Lab (Room 821) maintains equipment designed to facilitate independence for persons with disabilities, and offers training in the use of the equipment and software.  included are word processors, voice synthesizer, electronic readers, a Braille imprinter, a print enlarger, and a voice controlled computer. See The Assistive Technology Lab for an update of services.

SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES:

bulletThe Shasta College Disability Resource Center provides classes for students with developmental disabilities.  These classes take the form of academics, supported living, art, physical education, and support for success in regular education classes. A variety of classes are currently offered on campus in Redding as well as in several off-campus sites.
