For
some students the opportunity exists to work at local fire stations through
our Work Site Learning program. This provides the student with even greater
benefits in skills, knowledge development and personal enrichment. If you
just want a “diploma” and a “seasonal job”, there are other programs that
will better suit your needs. If you want to learn and develop those skills,
traits and abilities that are likely to get you hired as a permanent full
time firefighter, Shasta College is the place for you.
For those students who
demonstrate exceptional abilities, skills, maturity and have the desire to
excel, you may be selected to work at the Shasta College Fire Department.
We are one of the last colleges in the country that still has its own fire
department. Students who are selected from the Firefighter I Academy to
work at the Shasta College Fire Department can promote to Pump Operator,
Engineer and eventually Lieutenant in charge of a full shift of
firefighters. Shasta College Fire Department students work a regular
“Kelly” rotation shift system, ten 24-hour shifts per month. The same shift
system is utilized by most of the major fire departments on the west coast.
While these are not paid positions, they do provide the student with
exceptional “resume” material which helps set them above the rest of the
candidates applying for firefighter positions. As far as we know, of the
30,000 fire departments in the United States, Shasta College Fire Department
is the only department that has fully staffed engine companies operating 24
hours a day, 365 days a year using solely volunteer firefighters and fire
officers. The department provides fire/rescue/EMS services on-campus and
off-campus to a large area of Shasta County. The department gives students
an outstanding opportunity for personal development not available in other
college fire training programs. Shasta College Fire Department students can
complete special projects related to: fire prevention, training, equipment
maintenance/rehabilitation, public education, fire pre-planning, etc…
For those students who
are selected to work at the Shasta College Fire Department, training takes
on a high priority. Selected students often leave with over fifteen hundred
additional hours of training that students from other colleges do not have.
This greatly enhances your ability to get a job in the fire service and keep
that position once hired. During the summer months some students will be
selected for summer positions, which include a stipend to help cover living
expenses while not enrolled in classes.
