Ron
Marley is a full time tenured instructor at Shasta College in Redding,
California. From 1995 until January of 2003 he was the college’s Fire
Chief, Fire Marshal, Fire Technology Director and Fire Academy Coordinator.
Prior to his appointment at Shasta College he was the Chief Fire
Investigator for the City of Dixon Fire Department in Solano County and the
Assistant Chief in charge of Training, Safety and Fire Prevention at West
Plainfield Fire Department in Yolo County (an all volunteer department).
While in the Sacramento area, he was a member of both the Yolo County and
Solano County Fire Investigation Units. He served of the Board of Directors
of the Yolo County Arson / Bomb Investigation Unit and the Yolo County
Training Officers Association.
From
1985 until 1995 he was a Reserve Police Officer with Davis Police Department
assigned to the Arson/Bomb Investigation Unit. In addition, he was an
active member of the Greater Sacramento Area Explosive Ordnance Disposal
Unit, one of the largest bomb units in the America which included members
from the California State Police, CHP, Sacramento County, Sacramento City,
Woodland and Davis Police Departments and a number of other agencies in the
Northern California area.
From
1980 until 1987 he served in the United States Air Force. Trained in a
number of highly specialized fields including Air Traffic Control, he spent
most of his time in Explosive Ordnance Disposal concentrating on the render
safe procedures for Landmines, Booby-traps and Nuclear weapons.
From
1977 until his enlistment in the military in 1980 he worked as a freelance
photographer and cameraman for ABC News and Wide World of Sports, NBC Sports
World, CBS Sports/News as well as working on some feature films as an
assistant cameraman. While in the film businesses he traveled extensively
working on some of the premier sports shoots of the time including; Cliff
Diving in Acapulco; Surfing in Hawaii; car racing from Indianapolis to New
Zealand; the World Championships of Poker in Las Vegas; Snowmobile racing in
Wisconsin; NHRA Drag racing in Seattle; motorcycle hill climbs in Utah and
NBC’s pre-work with the athletes of the failed 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Chief Marley has taught
extensively for the United States Military, United States Forest Service,
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, local governments and
colleges. At Shasta College he teaches most of the lecture programs such as
fire behavior, building construction, equipment and systems, command,
leadership, safety and survival, ICS, etc… Within the Fire Academy he
teaches Ropes and Knots, Salvage and Overhaul, ICS, Fire Behavior, Auto
Extrication and the Leadership –Team Building sections.
He is accredited to teach a
number of the California State Fire Marshal’s Office, “Fire Officer and
Chief Officer” Certification classes such as Fire Command, Fire
Investigation and Fire Instructor. He is the Lead Coordinator for the
United States Forest Service, North Zone Training Facility S-244/S-245 Field
Observer Course and the Fire Instructor classes. Each spring he teaches a
series of specialized Mapping, Compass, GPS and Navigation classes for the
Smoke Jumpers and Hotshots. He is actively involved with the Redding IHC
leadership development field exercise which concludes every year with a
Staff Ride of the South Canyon Fire in late May.
He is an adjunct instructor
for the United States Fire Administrations, Nation Fire Academy- Bachelors
of Science Degree program. He teaches two of these courses (Advanced Fire
Investigation and Structures and System Design) through Cogswell College, a
private engineering school in Cupertino, California.
With almost 300 semester
units of college credits, he is committed to continuing education. His most
memorable time in college was while he was working on his Bachelor of
Science Degree in “Fire Origin and Cause Investigation” issued from the
Forensic Science/Criminal Justice Division,
California
State University at
Sacramento. He was able to
intern with some of the most respected forensic scientists in the world
including John DeHaan, author of “Kirk’s Fire Investigation”.
Science 1997, Chief Marley
has served on one of the Type 1 Incident Command Teams which are deployed to
major fire and non-fire events to support the local or regional command
system. Since the late 1990’s, he has had the privilege to travel around
the United States fighting many of the countries most devastating wildland
fires. He has have worked as a Division Supervisor and Strike Team Leader,
but most of his time has been spent as a Field Observer. In the summer 0f
2004, Ron spent 57 straight days on fires in the western United States
completing leadership, fire behavior and team development research for his
classes.
Additionally, Ron has a
private fire consulting company, is active on a number of private and
government advisory boards, is working on the initial development of two
separate technical / trade books and is going back to college to eventually
