Fire Technology Curriculum

The Fire Technology curriculum is planned to serve both as an in-service program and as a pre-employment two-year program for community college students aspiring to enter the field of firefighting. Each student must complete thirty-five and a half (35½ ) units. Fire Technology majors may be required to fulfill a tour of duty at a local fire station.

The suggested course sequence has been supplied to the Counseling Division by the Instructional Division. Students are urged to use this outline along with the Shasta College catalog. Particular attention should be paid to course prerequisites and to whether a class is taught Fall or Spring semester or both. Courses listed may be offered either spring or fall semesters, or at the discretion of the division.

NOTE:  Even though it is not required for the degree, most students should take the Fire Fighter I Academy during their first semester at Shasta College.

Students must complete the "CORE" courses listed below for their major. In addition, students must satisfy all the regular Assoc. in Science degree requirements. For a complete description of those requirements, please refer to the "Associate in Science" section of the Shasta College Catalog

 2.   MOST FIRE TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS STAY AT THE COLLEGE FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS.  DURING THIS TIME, THEY TRY TO COMPLETE ALL OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE FIRE OFFICER COURSES, ALL OF THE FIRE ACADEMIES, ALL ELECTIVES THAT CAN BE TRANSFERRED TO THE STATE OR UC SYSTEM AND ANY REMEDIAL COURSES THAT THEY NEED TO COMPLETE IN ORDER TO FULFILL THE MANDATED GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS.

 3.   MOST STUDENTS WHO ARE SERIOUS ABOUT GETTING A JOB ENROLL IN WORK SITE LEARNING EVERY SEMESTER AND COMPLETE “RIDE-ALONG” TIME IN A LOCAL FIRE STATION.  THIS EXPERIENCE HAS PROVEN CRITICAL TO GETTING A JOB IN THE FIRE SERVICE.
