In Class Agenda:

bullet

 Discuss your "topic pitch."

bullet

Look at some sample Explanatory Essays.  Explanatory Essay Assignment.  Then look at the three essays from previous semesters, and decide which hit or miss the mark, and why.  Talk with your peers for better insights!  The class will discuss.  Make notes about what works and what doesn't.

bullet9.1.  Chapter Three of your textbook discusses the use of various writing techniques. Peruse "God's Country" in The Perfect Storm, and find some examples of the following:
  1. Use of sensory details (Reid 54).
  2. Use of comparisons and images (Reid 84-85) to help readers see through the eyes of the writer.
  3. Description of what is not there as well as what is there (Reid 54).
  4. Indication of changes in the subject's form or condition (54).

Use these to create an in-class essay which shows how the writer has used at least three of these methods.

Your essay should have introductory and concluding paragraphs.  Each of the "methods" (three minimum) you will tell me about should have its own paragraph, so we're looking for a Five Paragraph Essay.

Introduce the method, quote each passage from TPS and explain how it illustrates that technique. Use language from your Reid (I've given you page numbers above) text to explain clearly why your selection matches that writing technique. Make sure you put the author's words in quotes, and include an in-text citation to the page.

An example of a similar assignment can be found here.  While this writer is focusing on different writing elements, you can get a good idea of how he takes a point from the text and finds an example in the book.

Due Today:  Be prepared to pitch your topic for your essay.  Have a focused concept and three main points.

Homework Due Wednesday:

8.3.  Explanatory Essay: Two typed pages and four articles printed out.

bullet

Your articles should have marks and notations about what information you will include in your paper.

bullet

If you've had any second thoughts, today is the last day to change your topic.

Homework Due Monday:

9.2.  Print out and read "Reconstruction" by Mark Helprin.  Bring to class!  Please read at least two times.  Three times is BETTER.  Underline and make notes about "observing" techniques you recognize from your chapter in the text.
