Discuss Remembering Essay.  Your textbook discusses in Chapter Four the use of memory techniques. In this assignment we will incorporate memory techniques into a Remembering Essay.
bullet

View assignment details here. Be sure to read all of the assignment details before you begin to write.

bullet

View one example of a remembering essay here and another essay here.   Which do you think was the most successful?

bullet

Your essay should be a minimum of four pages (1000 words).  Use the memory write we started in class, or use another memory.  A first draft is due in class on Monday the 16th (one week), and a polished final draft due on Wednesday the 18th.

Research a concept; teach the class.  Groups will work on learning a writing concept to teach the class.  Use powerpoint, handouts, and other tools of your devising.  Write five test questions on your concept.

bullet

KEEPING BUSY ITEMS:  Do these when you've finished your task and others are still working.
bullet

Go to the Writer's Reference website.  Select "Grammar Exercises," and then "Punctuation."  Take as many "comma" quizzes as you have time for.  Make certain you enter your full name, and my correct email address:  phanford@shastacollege.edu

4.5. Summary of "The Right Chemistry" by Anastasia Toufexis.  This is an example of an Explanatory Essay, which will be assigned soon.  Keep this in your binder, ready for discussion in class on Wednesday.  I recommend reading this article more than once!  Then SUMMARIZE this article using the techniques we discussed in the Summary presentation above.  Have this nicely formatted and ready to turn in today!

Homework from last Wednesday, all due today.

Homework Due Wednesday:

5.1.  Your summary (approximately 100-150 words) of a journal article is due Wednesday.  You need to include (right on the summary, new page not required) a correct bibliographic entry for the article.  The article must also be turned in.  Paperclip or staple this all together.  Summary, citation, and article always needed for full 30 point credit.

5.2. Read "Techniques for Writing about Observations" in your text.  In The Perfect Storm, continue reading "God's Country."  Watch for similes, and begin looking for metaphors.  A metaphor is "a direct or implied comparison suggesting that A is B:  "At the dinner table, George is a vacuum cleaner" (Reid 82). Underline all of the similes and metaphors you find.  (You might make a list of the page numbers so you can find them again easily if you need to.)

PLEASE TURN OFF COMPUTERS BEFORE YOU LEAVE

5.3. Bilbiolography for Explanatory Essay:  Complete the library assignment handed out in class.  Have a bibliography with five entries nicely formatted in class on Monday.

5.4  Library Report:  Do the usual report explaining how you framed your search terms and letting me know what returns you received.  Don't forget to use quotes around your search terms.
