The Perfect Storm
: "The Flemish Cap" in The Perfect Storm.

Announcement:  One of our students, Ryan Vanatta, has been looking for his lost computer flash drive that he left in room 811 on Monday morning. It is a 512K size, with some blue color on it. If you locate it, his phone number is 209-9177, and he is offering a $20 reward. It has a lot of important files on it.

In Class Agenda:

bullet

Troubleshoot homework questions, problems.  Group review of 3.3 bibliographies (which are due today).  Help your group members correct format and typos.  Review of formatting.

bullet

Discuss memory writes from Monday.  Have them ready!

bullet

Turn in homework -- just place on table at the front of the room.

bullet

Try again to get into WebCT.  They now have our class linked.

4.1. Boolean handout, Boolean presentation.  If you'd like more information, check out this link.  Take notes, write a quick summary of what you learned.

Check into WebCT, go to "assessments" and take the MLA quiz!

bullet

4.2. The Perfect Storm discussion Answer questions in handout. 4.3. Do a "tour" write, using transitional phrases.  Return to class in 30 minutes (4:10), briefly share your tour writes; turn in.

bullet

bullet

bullet

Discuss homework for Day 5.

Due Today:

From Library Assignment Two:

3.4. Bibliography with entries properly formatted.  This bibliography should be to journals which you have found in EbscoHost in your second library assignment.  Here is a sample.          *

3.5. Library Report

3.6. Index card due with the name of the journal from which you will be selecting articles to summarize this semester.  Write a sentence or two about why the information this publication will be useful to you.  For a reminder about this, check "Semi Weekly Summaries on your Syllabus.

Homework due on  Monday:  (ignore the items in yellow text)

Review information on Sentence Fragments in your text on pages 716-18.  Be ready to score well on a quiz over this topic next week!

4.6. I always learn a lot about my students from their writing and class discussion, but they learn very little about me.  Follow the "About MzH" link on my webpage, and read about my background.  Then compose at least one question about what you find there.  Put that on an index card and turn it in on Monday.  I'll answer some of them in class next week.

bullet

4.7. Print out and read "The Right Chemistry" by Anastasia Toufexis.  This is an example of an Explanatory Essay, which will be assigned soon.  Keep this in your binder, ready for discussion in class on Monday.  I recommend reading this article more than once!  Then SUMMARIZE this article using the techniques we discussed in the Summary presentation above.  Have this nicely formatted and ready to turn in on Monday!

bullet

Make sure you have your textbook and have read the first chapter.  We're having a quiz on Monday!

4.8. In your The Perfect Storm reading assignment, underline or highlight the portions of the text that stand out for you in terms of the writing.

Select one paragraph from this selection and write 250 words about what you liked (or perhaps what you didn't like!). Don't simply repeat the selection, explain why you liked or disliked this section of writing.  This document should be typed and should reflect your best grammar and spelling.
bullet

Read the current chapter in The Perfect Storm.  Underline similes (see pg. 87-88 of your text), metaphors (also see pg. 87-88 of your text) and transitional words.  Notice the areas of the text with detailed descriptions (54-55).  Look for definitions (see page 86).  Create a document in which you give me example of the five elements underlined here.

bullet

Review the Remembering Essay requirements.  Decide if you would like to continue writing about your experience used in the first memory write, or expand on another one.  Be ready to report on your topic on Monday, and have at least two new or additional pages written.

bullet

Discuss Remembering Essay.  Your textbook discusses in Chapter Four the use of memory techniques. In this assignment we will incorporate memory techniques into a Remembering Essay.
bullet

View assignment details here. Be sure to read all of the assignment details before you begin to write.

bullet

View one example of a remembering essay here and another essay here.   Which do you think was the most successful?

bullet

Your essay should be a minimum of four pages (1000 words).  Use the memory write we started in class, or use another memory.  A first draft is due in class on Monday the 16th (one week), and a polished final draft due on Wednesday the 18th.
