bullet19.2 Song Interpretation.  We'll begin with song lyrics and a music video to "dip our toes" into literary analysis (and THEN move on to "A Worn Path").

"Responding to Literature," explores how reading, rereading, and discussing a literary work provides the fullest appreciation for artists' works. Chapter 11 shows you how reading imaginatively makes us partners in the creative process, and how rereading with a writer's eye can help us analyze the literary elements of a work so that we can share our insights with others. Our goal is to:

bulletRead, annotate, and discuss a literary work.
bulletChoose the audience and purpose for a written literary analysis.
bulletWrite a thesis statement that clearly states your interpretation of a piece of literature.
bulletUse a work's literary elements--character, plot, images, symbols, and so on--to support your claims about a piece of literature.
bulletDefine the various elements of literary analysis, including Character, Plot, Point of View, Setting, Style and Theme.

Have in class:  Your copy of The Perfect Storm

bulletMake necessary corrections, expansions, and improvements on your first draft, and submit on Wednesday, secured in a folder with all prewriting, sources, earlier drafts, and peer comments.  If you expect to have an illness, injury, major romantic breakup, or death in your family that day, plan on submitting your paper in ADVANCE.  Students who arrive late with their papers will not receive full credit.  Final Draft by deadline:  50 points.
