Textbook:     Basic College Mathematics by K. Elayn Martin-Gay - Prentice Hall Publishers (second edition)

A.        General Procedure.

The text is divided into chapters that are subdivided into sections.  Each class session will cover        from one to three sections in the text.  Class will usually begin with a quiz that concentrates on the previous assignment but also may review previously covered topics.  We then cover the next one to three sections in the text.  Sometimes text material will be supplemented by worksheets.

B.       Calculators.

You will not be allowed to use a calculator for some sections but will need one for others.  Your teacher will keep you informed.  You will want to get a scientific calculator with a dual line display, such as Texas Instruments’ TI-30X IIS.

C.       Attendance, Late Work, Make-up, and Extra Credit.

If any or part of a homework assignment or a worksheet is taken up, it must be turned in when it is initially taken up or it will not be accepted for any reason.  Quizzes and tests must be taken at the time they are given.  There is no make-up on homework, classwork, worksheets, quizzes, or tests.  You will receive a grade for each graded item, and the grade will be zero for all missed or late items.  No extra-credit work is accepted.

D.       Grading Factors and Grading.

Each test counts as one grading factor.  Tests are usually given at the end of each chapter but may be given more often.  The WQ (Worksheet & Quiz) average counts as two grading factors, and the final test counts as two grading factors.  The average of these grading factors (WQ average, tests, and final test) will be your final grade.  The lowest 20% of your WQ grades will be dropped when computing your WQ average.  Your lowest test score will be dropped when computing your final grade.  If you have two zeros on tests, one will be dropped and your final test grade will replace the second zero.  Any subsequent zeros on test will count as zeros in computing your final grade.

E.        Percent-to-Letter Grading Scale.

Percent Grade               Letter Grade

90% and above A

80% - 89%  B

68% - 79%  C

55% -67%  D

Below 55% (or failure to take final test)   F

F.        Cheating.

Cheating in any form will not be tolerated.  If you are caught cheating on a test or WQ item, you will receive a grade of -1 the first time.  Any –1 grade will not be dropped when computing any of your grades.  If you are caught cheating a second time, you will receive an “F” for the course.

G.       Attendance Bonus.

A bonus of 6% will be added to the final average of any student who has no absences.  This drops by 3% per absence in a 1½-hour class and 2% per absence in a1-hour class.  There is no such thing as an excused absence when calculating this bonus; only physical presence during a class session is acceptable.  In computing the attendance bonus, each 10 minutes missed any time during a session counts as 1/3 of an absence.  Missing more than 30 minutes of a session counts as an absence.

Mathematics Faculty Expectations of all Students;

The Mathematics Faculty believes that all students should have an equal opportunity to learn. In order to achieve this goal all students are expected to exhibit respectful behavior to other students and to the instructor.  Please observe the following specific guidelines.

CHEATING:  Unless specifically announced otherwise, all tests will be closed book with no use of notes allowed.  Use of these materials or receiving or giving aid during an exam will result in a zero grade on that exam and may result in being suspended from the course.  This zero score will count in the final grade determination.

FINAL EXAM:  A final exam and /or regular class activity will be conducted during the scheduled final exam period, and all students will be expected to attend.  Failure to attend during the final exam period will result in an “F” grade for the course unless special arrangements have been made in advance with the instructor.

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION:  No class taught by mathematics faculty is eligible for credit by “credit by examination.”

GUESTS/CHILDREN/PETS:  Only authorized persons are allowed in the classrooms.  Children will not be allowed in the classrooms or the learning center.  Children should not be left unattended in the hallway.  If a student needs assistance with childcare during class time, please contact the EOPS office.  EOPS may be able to help with long-term day care; however, it does not provide day-care service on a drop-in basis.  No pets (with the exception of those which aid a physically challenged individual) are allowed in the 1100 building.

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR:  A student may be suspended from the class if he or she engages in a classroom behavior that interferes with the learning environment.  Such behavior includes, but is not limited to, disruptive conversations with fellow students, regular tardiness, leaving the classroom during class time, and eating or drinking in class.  Students are expected to turn off all pagers, cell phones, and other electronic devices during class time.

ATTENDANCE:   Students are expected to attend all class meetings.  A student who fails to attend the first meeting of a course without notifying the instructor may be dropped from the class.  In addition, an instructor may drop a student for excessive absences.  Nevertheless, it is always the student’s responsibility to officially drop or withdraw from the class.  Students who fail to file the necessary forms, even though they stop attending class, will be assigned a course grade.

Note:  This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
