Module Eleven
Dr. Laura Valvatne, Instructor

Clinical Therapy: The Powers of Social Cognition

Step One: Learning Objectives for Module Eleven

After completing your study of this module you should be able to:

  1. Describe the thought patterns of depressed persons and discuss whether their attributions are a cause or consequence of their depressed mood.
  2. Describe the thought patterns associated with loneliness and social anxiety.
  3. Identify three social-psychological principles that can be usefully applied in treating psychological disorders.

Step Two:
Read Module Eleven:  "Clinical Therapy: The Powers of Social Cognition" (pages 99-110) in your textbook.

Step Three:

As a part of this module you have the opportunity to measure your level of loneliness, shyness, and depression.  Although you are not required to complete these inventories or to share your findings with the other students in the class or with your instructor, you are welcome to do so.  On the Discussion Board there is a topic titled Module 11: Inventory Results and if you choose to post something about the inventories we will be interested in reading what you have to say. If you are NOT lonely, shy, and/or depressed share ideas about your life that keep you happily content.  If you ARE lonely, shy, and/or depressed talk to us about whatever you feel comfortable discussing.  If you should receive scores on any of these inventories that indicate you are a  lonely, shy, and/or depressed person I would like you to let me know so we can discuss the results and decide if there is any action you can take to lighten your worries.  You can let me know your concerns privately by sending me an e-mail to the socialpsych@snowcrest.net address.

Click here for the loneliness inventory.  You will hand score this inventory.

Click here for the shyness inventory. You will hand score this inventory.

*Click here for the depression inventory. Your score will be calculated for you.

If this "depression inventory link"* does not work, use this URL address     http://psychcentral.com/depquiz.htm    --copy and paste it into the URL address box in your browser.

Step Four: Critical Thinking Exercise

On the Discussion Board write a 200 word essay in which you discuss one of the following topics.

1. Discuss the cognitive processes that accompany depression, loneliness, and shyness (social anxiety).

2. Discuss the social-psychological approaches that have been used to help people overcome their loneliness, shyness, or depression and explain whether you think these approaches have the potential to bring lasting

change for individuals who have lived the trap of self-defeating cognitions.

Step Five:

Write down any terms or concepts that you learned about in this module that  you might want to use when you write your Application Paper.
