THREE O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING
Nestled warm under covers
your body is awake,
but eyes remain tight shut.
Outside the blankets,
you know it’s cold.
You resist as long as you can,
finally realizing that it’s no use.
Throw back the covers.
Scurry to the bathroom.
Relief, blessed relief.
Quickly back to bed.
Now don’t think, you caution.
Just sleep.
Just sleep.
The thoughts race through your mind.
Homework still undone.
Make an appointment to have the oil changed.
Dishes are waiting to be washed
from last night’s dinner.
Check the e-mail.
Return those telephone calls.
Lousy, rotten, no good thoughts!
Can’t you ever wait till day break?
