Whether
you wish to improve your writing, brush up on your
Spanish, learn the economic principles driving the
stock market, or discover the sociological forces that
affect the way you drive your car, Shasta College’s
Division for Language Arts and Social Sciences has
something to interest you. Our instructors and the
programs they create are top notch.
Take Dr.
Joan Eberle for example. In the past two years her
basic reading and writing students have entered the
Townsend Foundation Scholarship Competition; 32 of
these students won from 100 to 500 dollars each -- a
feat unmatched by any of the hundreds of schools that
compete for these prizes across the nation!
Many of
our faculty are writers themselves. “She wrote the
book on it!” we say of a person who’s an expert. And
this is certainly true at Shasta College. For example,
psychology professor Dr. Laura Valvatne puts to the
test every day her research into the ways people learn.
Author of several study guides for students, she
teaches the students an invaluable skill -- how to
learn. Our teachers care about the success of their
students.
When Dr.
Stephen Cragg teaches politics, his students are
engaged in sophisticated research techniques, and in
the process supply important data for our community
leaders. Professors Kathryn Gessner and Teal
Macmillan, with their expertise in English and history,
team up to provide a dynamic interdisciplinary cluster
of courses with a superior completion rate. And the
list goes on.
From the
celebration of Black History Month which resident poet
Pamela Spoto
coordinates, to our museum’s exhibitions that predate
the gold rush, we’re proud of the education here. The
Division of Language Arts and Social Sciences offers a
broad range of educational experiences, drawing on the
most fundamental values of our traditions and the
latest in technology, so that our students may thrive
in a complex world.
