Q1. Sydney B, who recently watched a video about iodine deficiency, contacted a non-profit organization, and accepted a coordinator position in an iodine deficiency disorder prevention program through promoting iodized salt in Indonesia.  She is good at learning foreign languages, and became fluent in Bahasa Indonesia after taking an intensive language course in Yogyakarta, a historical city located in Java.

Q1-1. When Sydney visited one of the project sites, she found out that some women in the village had a visible lump in the neck.  What are these women experiencing and how does it happen?

Q1-2. Some of the women with a lump in the neck are pregnant.  What may happen to their babies after they give birth if the mothers don’t get any treatment?

Sydney and her local colleagues found out that despite the fact that iodized salt produced by a large manufacture is available in local stores in the villages, there are local salt producers that sell non-iodized salt in the market.  Sydney called you and asked for your opinion about how to solve the problem because outsiders’ opinions were often objective and valuable.  What would you suggest to her?
