CREDIT CLASSES

ESL 236 ADVANCED HIGH 5 Units

Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process or ESL 235
ESL 236 will provide students the opportunity to refine and expand their knowledge of the various aspects of language so that, upon completion of the course, students will be able to communicate orally and in writing with a greater degree of accuracy and fluency. The course will stress the development of reading and writing skills necessary to meet the needs of daily living as well as to set the basic foundation for further language study.

ESL 235 ADVANCED 5 Units
Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process or ESL 234
This course will expand on competencies acquired in ESL 234. Students will be expected to participate in discussions and write more extensively than in previous classes. The text, supplemental readings in a variety of genres, videotapes, and guest speakers will provide material for discussion and written work. Formal aspects of language will be analyzed in the context of meaningful communication.

ESL 234 INTERMEDIATE HIGH 4 Units
Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process or ESL 233
This course will review and reinforce material learned in ESL 233. Students will expand their general ability to communicate and conduct affairs in oral and written English through the reading and discussion of a variety of adapted short stories, essays, and magazine articles. Writing assignments will progress to paragraphs and short compositions with attention to content, organization and form.

ESL 233 INTERMEDIATE 4 Units
Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process or ESL 232
This course will build upon the skills learned in the previous ESL levels. Students will develop further proficiency through exercises in spelling, sentence construction, speaking, reading, writing, and areas of interest.

ESL 232 BEGINNING HIGH 4 Units
Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process or ESL 231
This course stresses the development of oral language skills and vocabulary necessary to function in practical areas of daily life. Through texts, teacher-made materials, and student-generated writing, students will continue to develop a basic sight vocabulary related to their experiences and immediate needs.

ESL 231 BEGINNING MID 4 Units
Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process or ESL 230
Course designed to develop the student’s ability to communicate and conduct the affairs of daily life in spoken and written English. Emphasis will be placed on building basic working vocabulary and the construction of simple declarative and interrogative sentences. The students will improve their oral clarity and effectiveness as well as English reading and writing skills.

ESL 230 BEGINNING 4 Units
Advisory: ESL assessment and placement process
A course designed for the beginner in English. Develops basic oral and written communication skills. Oral emphasis is on conversation. Written component progresses through reading simple sentences. The purpose of the course is to prepare students for placement in ESL 231.

NON-CREDIT CLASSES

ESL 385 LITERACY 0 Units

A course designed for the absolute beginner in English. Introduces basic oral communication. Written component begins with alphabet and numbers.
