Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's

  What is ESL?
English as a second language instruction helps students whose native language is not English succeed in college and at work. To meet the needs of ESL students, Shasta College offers courses in different levels and skill areas.  The program provides both language instruction and cultural orientation.  Classes are small and comfortable.

Should I take the ESL COMPASS Placement Test?

  • Did you begin living in the United States after the age of twelve years old?
  • Do you have trouble understanding spoken or written English?
  • Do others have trouble understanding your English?

If you answered yes to any of the questions you should take the ESL COMPASS Placement Test. For test dates and times, contact the Shasta College Assessment office at (530) 225-4651.
If you are not able to take a computer exam, contact the ESL office at 225-4828 for testing.

What if I do not score at least 500 on the TOEFL?
You may still be accepted into Shasta College with a TOEFL score between 450 and 500, with the stipulation that you enroll in ESL course work and maintain full-time status (minimum of 12 units) as per the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) regulations.  Subsequent semester placement into academic courses will be based on ESL assessment or the TOEFL score.

If you have more questions, call the ESL Office at
 (530) 225-4828, or email cschurig@shastacollege.edu.
