Engineering Drafting Challenge

"The Challenge" is an engineering and drafting contest for the high schools in this area. The challenge generally has had about 100 contestants from nine high schools. The students compete in six contests. Besides the personal challenge and school competition significant prizes heighten the competition. Local business and industry have supported this engineering and drafting challenge with well over $10,000 to $15,000 in prizes and $600 to $800 in scholarship.

Advanced Mechanical

The challenge has always be held in March. It includes three 75 minutes board drafting contests the areas of basic and advanced mechanical drafting, and architectural drafting. Two other problems are sent to the high schools for 3 1/2 weeks of work before their challenge presentation. The first is a CAD problem to be produced on their high school computers. These CAD problems demonstrate ability with both the technical drafting system and computer drawing programs. The CAD programs also require problem solving or design work. The engineering design problem requires a team of high school students to design and construct a device to be released to perform in a contest without direct control. Examples have been to capture and remove tennis balls from a circle, another was to be first to deliver an egg into a box, a third was to remove the most water from a barrel in three minutes. Of course the engineering team also had to produce the drawings necessary to construct their device. The newest contest is a car race for freshmen. The freshmen students have constructed their unique car, using the structure of an automobile valve cover.

This website will be used in the future to provide special information, hints, and instruction to those high school students planning to compete in the Engineering Drafting Challenge.
