Position: Research & Monitoring Technician
Pay: $9-$17 an hour with overtime
Hours: Mon. - Fri., with about 40 hours per week.
Description: A crew of summer field employees will help maintain the company’s research and monitoring projects throughout Sierra Pacific’s timberlands. These projects include weather stations to monitor fire conditions, stream water quality, and forest microclimate research. Projects may be located on multiple areas of the SPI ownership, so Research Technicians must be willing to travel. Fieldwork is arduous by nature and the applicant must be willing to cross-country hike and negotiate steep, brushy terrain to maintain equipment.

Duties of the Research and Monitoring Technician may include, but are not limited to:
  • Calibration, installation, maintenance, and downloading of various sensing devices to monitor watercourses, fire weather, and terrestrial forest conditions.
  • Careful handling of valuable scientific data and accurate data entry into established databases.
  • Operation of forestry equipment including, tractors, bucket truck, ATV, and power equipment.
  • Additional duties may include assistance with timber harvest plans, botanical surveying, site preparation, and other forestry activities.

Requirements:

  • Valid Drivers License.
  • Ability to cross-country hike and negotiate steep, brushy terrain in adverse weather conditions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member, while being self motivated.
  • Good organizational skills and effective note taking.
  • Ability to use maps, compass, and GPS to navigate in a forest landscape.
  • Excellent communications skills.

Preferences:

  • Educational background or work experience in Forestry, Natural Resources, or Timber Industry.
  • Understanding of radio communications systems, electronics, and mechanical experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Other: Dates of Employment: Summer 2009. Base Location: Anderson, California. This position will require overnight travel and work outside of the home-base area. Meals and lodging will be provided by SPI for employees when assigned to work from a location other than their base.

Position: Botanical Survey Technician
Pay: Hourly, $9-$17 an hour with overtime
Hours: Mon. - Fri., about 40+ hours a week
Description: The Research and Monitoring Department of Sierra Pacific Industries, a private timber company based out of Anderson in Northern California, is looking to hire seasonal botany technicians to conduct detailed botanical surveys of the company’s timberlands under the supervision of a botany crew leader. Surveys may be conducted on multiple areas of the SPI ownership so the applicant must be willing to travel. Successful applicants will be able to work in remote field conditions, hike steep slopes over rocky ground, and be willing to work full days under summer conditions. Duties may include: Plant ID of CA flora to family, genus, and species; Measuring and recording topographic and geological characteristics of a site; surveying THP areas for rare plant species; measuring canopy using various instruments; navigating forest roads using a map.

Requirements: Educational Requirements – General Botany Course, Plant Taxonomy, General Biology, Plant Ecology, Experience with California Flora. Preferred Course Work – Plant Physiology or Anatomy, Geology, Soil Science. One season of botanical fieldwork desirable.

Other: Dates of Employment: Summer 2009, dependant upon student’s school schedule. Base Location: Anderson, California This position will require overnight travel and work outside of the home-base area.
