Disability Service Programs for Students Frequently Asked Questions What is DSPS? (Disability Service Programs for Students) The DSPS provides services implemented through the Disability Service Programs for Students. The DSPS is responsible for determining and providing required academic accommodations for students with disabilities. A variety of support services are provided to students with verified disabilities. How do I get started?
Once we have received the above items we can then schedule an appointment for you to meet with one of our counselors. How do I get my medical or psychological records from another institution or from my physician? You need to sign a Consent for Release of Information/Disability Verification form to request records from another institution. We can then request your records via fax from the institution that can verify your disability. After you complete and sign the student portion of the Disability Verification form you can then take it directly to your physician to be completed or we can fax it to the physician/licensed professional and wait for their reply. Once we receive a reply, we then notify you to come in for an appointment. How is the confidentiality of a student's records/status maintained through
the DSPS Department? Is there a fee for services through the DSPS? Are registration fees waived at Shasta College for students with
disabilities? Can I get help filling out my financial aid paperwork or other college paperwork? The Disability Service Programs for Students is not able to help students fill out paperwork. Students need to go to the office that the paperwork is associated with in order to obtain assistance in getting answers to their questions regarding financial aid or other. It is up to that office as to whether or not they have available staff to help fill out paperwork. Generally, it is best to have a family member or friend help to fill out the paperwork. Is there any financial aid or book vouchers provided through the DSPS? The DSPS does not provide financial assistance. There are other financial assistance programs available through the college such as EOPS, Room 2071. Can I get a handicapped parking permit and if I have one, where can I park? The DSPS does not provide handicapped parking permits. Only the student’s physician can provide the paperwork necessary for the student to obtain a parking permit through the Department of Motor Vehicles. Students with handicapped parking permits are allowed to park free of charge in any designated parking spot on campus including student, staff and metered parking. There is no need to purchase a Shasta College parking permit in this case. How important is it to me to bring my referral for services to the Learning Services Office (LSO)? Once a student has received a Referral for Services form from the Disability Counselor or Learning Disability Specialist, they must bring the form to the LSO so that tutors and/or note providers can be located. Without the Referral for Services form from the student, the LSO has no record of needing services. How do I schedule a test for an evening class? The hours of testing time for students through the Learning Services Office (LSO) – Room 2033 is during the regular hours of operation, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you need to schedule a test for an evening class, you will need to take the exam during the open hours of the LSO on the same day of the scheduled exam.
