Q: I am interested in your
program and would like to have an application.
A: All applications are released in January through the admissions office.
All interested candidates are encouraged to attend the informational meeting
held each year prior to release of the applications. At this meeting,
the admissions office provides important information to insure that all
applications will qualify when submitted by the candidate. To receive an
application anytime after the specified date in January, please call
admissions at (530) 242-7667 or 242-7650.
Q: How can I get more
information on your program?
A: Call the dental hygiene clinic or email
pguerrera@shastacollege.edu and
a brochure can be mailed.
Q: I have one prerequisite
course to complete, but I am not able to finish until May and the
application must be submitted in February. Can I apply for the class that begins in August?
A: All prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to application for any
Fall semester. When interested students are completing a course in the
Spring (Jan-May) semester, they are eligible for application the following
Spring (Jan). This means the student will have a short wait period
prior to application in which they can work or volunteer their time in a
dental office to increase their familiarity with the dental profession.
Q: I took a science course
several years ago and received a "C" for my final grade. Can I take
the course again to improve my GPA?
A: Any course taken in the past where the student receives a
passing grade will be the course considered for the GPA upon application.
A course can be taken for recency in content only when a significant
amount of time has passed. The first passing grade received is the
grade calculated in the GPA. The final determination on any course is
done by admissions. If you have other questions, please call the
admissions office and speak with Phyllis Pollack.
Q: Is it mandatory to attend the
informational meeting?
A: No. It is highly recommended due to the number of questions from
students regarding the application itself, and the admissions process.
Many applications that are received are determined disqualified due to
important information that has not been completed.
Q: What is the cost for
the two-year program?
A: The program costs are approximately $ 7,500.00 to $ 8,500.00 for
the two years. The main expense for students is the instrument kit
which must be purchased in the first semester.
Q: Will I be able to work during
the program?
A: It is understood by the faculty that
many students must work part-time. It is not encouraged due to the
demand of the curriculum each semester and the amount of study time required
by each student. The program is designed as a 5-day a week schedule.
Evening courses may occur due to the instructor's schedule. Many
students have found time to work on weekends.
Q: Do you accept out of
state applicants?
A: All candidates are welcome to apply to the program. A higher
level of eligibility is assigned to those who reside in the nine counties
(See Home Page).
Q: Is financial aid available?
A: Shasta College has information on grants and scholarships located
in the financial aid office. There are also many scholarships
available for dental hygiene students offered by health and professional
organizations throughout the country. This information is given to
enrolled students during the course of the program as it is received.
Q: How can I find out more
information on the costs for instruments and the program?
A: This information is provided to those applicants who have been
accepted for the program. An orientation meeting is held prior to the
onset of the Fall semester. Accepted candidates and alternates must
attend the orientation meeting.
Q: Does the program supply
the patients needed for the clinic sessions?
A: All enrolled students are responsible for locating their own
patients. The program provides many resources for patients and works
in conjunction with many community organizations. The dental hygiene
clinic is also open to the public.
