Personal Development Courses

 
The following Shasta College courses all relate to counseling issues or the development of personal skills for lifelong success. They are listed alphabetically by department prefix, in the order they are found in the Shasta College catalog. The Admissions and Records office can provide you with information about how to enroll in these or any other Shasta College courses. You may call Admissions and Records at (530) 242-7650

ADAP 100 College Success for Students with Disabilities

The course is designed primarily for students who have physical or learning disabilities. Topics include personal goals, the college experience, career exploration, study skills, support services and legal issues of importance to individuals with disabilities.

ADJU 103 Community Resources and Crisis Intervention (2 units)

Students will learn how to communicate in crisis situations and identify appropriate community agency referrals.

ADJU 106 Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Education and Training (4 units)

The course will create an awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault and an understanding of how to deal with situations involving rape or any type of sexual abuse.  It is designed to provide training to those who may become involved in crisis intervention and victim advocacy.

BUAD 45 Human Relations on the Job (3 units)

Designed to improve students' interpersonal skills for better relationships among employees and between employer and employee, the course emphasizes communication, motivation, leadership and group decision-making skills.

FSS 60 Life Management

Students learn skills for functioning effectively in their lives. Topics include: assessing personal values and goals, decision-making, time management, stress management, and improving interpersonal relationships.

HLTH 1 Health and Wellness (3 units)

Students will learn information they can use to improve their own well-being. Topics include mental health, nutrition, physical fitness, drugs-alcohol-tobacco, sexuality, major health problems, environmental health issues and the aging process.

HLTH 3 Substance Abuse Awareness

The course introduces students to tobacco, alcohol and drug problems in general, and it covers their misuse, abuse, and methods for their control.

STU 1 College Success (3 units)

This is a comprehensive course designed to help students achieve their educational goals. It covers such topics as motivation and discipline, memory development, time management, communication skills, career and transfer planning, and study skills.

STU 50 Getting Connected: An Orientation to College (.5 - 1 unit)

Recommended for all students, the course introduces the programs, services and policies of Shasta College. It also covers important information about planning your educational program, degree requirements and becoming a successful student.

STU 90 Career Choice (1 unit)

Students will learn a systematic approach for choosing a career. Topics include assessment of personal interests and skills, labor market information, career research, decision-making, and setting and implementing career goals.

STU 92 Worksite Readiness (1 unit)

This course prepares students to be successful on the job. Students will gain insight into employer expectations, effective workplace attitudes, developing job-related communication skills, conflict resolution, and managing stress.
