Scholarship finalist Rita Cain
(pictured on right) attended the EOPS Academic Achievement
Recognition Ceremony in 2006 for her daughter (pictured on
left). Rita says "As I watched all those people achieving their
goals at my age or older, I knew it was my turn. Returning to
school is probably one of the biggest challenges I have ever achieved".
Rita is completing her pre-requisites for Shasta College's nursing
program. (And her daughter transferred to Sacramento State
University to earn a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences). |

Scholarship nominee Julia Hunt
(pictured in the center) attributes her academic success to the support
and love of her mother (pictured on left) and her own decision to make
positive choices for the future of her daughter (pictured lower left).
She has earned a certificate in the clerical block at Shasta College, is
completing her second certificate in Entrepreneurship, and plans on
continuing for both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Business. |

Scholarship recipient Antoinette
Garret (pictured lower right) was the EOPS student of the year in 2006.
She assists women who have extreme barriers to overcome so that they too
can pursue their educational goals. She quoted one woman who said
"If you can do it then I can do it". Antoinette says much of her
academic success is because "I'm bullheaded". In other words, her
strong will and perseverance have been key in her accomplishments.

 |
Scholarship recipient Isabel
Ibarra (pictured left) came to the U.S. at age 15 with no English
language skills. She says "by no means do I see myself as a victim
of circumstances, but rather, a person with a purpose". She
quickly mastered the English language and now is fully bi-lingual, even
assisting with translating for others to succeed in their educational
goals. Her discipline and positive attitude have already led to
graduating from Shasta College and transferring to Sacramento State
University to finish her Bachelor's degree in Business. |

Scholarship recipient Leilani
McAninch (pictured on the left) is a re-entry student who now attends
Shasta College with her daughter. Together they live by "a
commitment statement to return to college and change our ideas of
learning to a style that is comfortable, efficient, thorough,
productive, an downright more enjoyable than past experiences... and
even more important my daughter and I are taking this journey together".
They inspire other students as community leaders who are also setting a
positive example in the Native Club. |

 |
Scholarship recipient Lorraine
Paoli (pictured on the left) is an honor student, mother, and community
leader. She is the first in her family to graduate from college.
She says that the nurses who took care of her and her babies were sent
from heaven just for them. Lorraine is currently a student in
Shasta College's nursing program. |

 |
Scholarship recipient Joan Thode

past problems". She is a mother of five children who has been
inspired by her own child to pursue a career in special education.
She graduated from Shasta College and is completing her Bachelors degree
at Chico State University in Liberal Studies. |

 |
Scholarship recipient
and CARE Student of the Year 2005 Andrea Rorie (pictured left) has
overcome tremendous hardships over the past few years. Her
greatest joy is that because she has "turned her life around", she now
serves as a positive role-model to her two children and her son tells
her he's proud of her. She recently graduated with two Associates
Degrees from Shasta College and has been accepted to start Yuba
College's Radiology Technician Program this Fall 2007.

Kellie Jussel (pictured lower center) was the CARE student of the

to Simpson University to complete her Bachelors degree in Psychology.

Diana Bates was honored as the 2007 CARE Student of the Year. To
quote one of her instructors "through her life challenges of being a
single parent of 3 children, one with special needs, she consistently
shows determination, strong values and a tenaciousness to reach her
goals that is rarely seen. She is consistently in the top 1% of
all college students in the field of Early Childhood Education".

Kristal Fraizier is a re-entry student who returned to college in order
to be a better example for her children. As a single parent with
many personal challenges, she has maintained outstanding grades, earned
an Associates degree in Family Studies, and is on her way to earning a
Bachelors degree in psychology. Her ultimate goal is to earn her
Masters degree in counseling. She has truly earned the title given

 |
Shasta College EOPS
and CARE alumni Jeanette Velasquez (pictured on left) says "It wasn’t
until I became a single-parent when I started taking college
seriously... I applied to the EOPS program as a full-time student and
balanced my priorities between school and my position in assisting other
single-parent students as the CARE Coordinator. I never lost sight of
my academic goal...Persistence paid off!" She earned her Associates
degree from Shasta College, completed a Bachelors Degree at Simpson
while still employed with EOPS/CARE, and completed a Masters degree in
School Counseling with a pupil personnel service credential through
the University of La Verne.
"I have been employed in various counseling
positions and I strongly believe I would not have these opportunities if
I did not have the degrees. Education provides opportunity!"
Jeanette is the counselor for Shasta College's Student Support Services
and is finishing her Doctoral Degree in Leadership from UC Davis. Jeanette
was the Alumni Speaker at the 2008 EOPS Academic Achievement Recognition
Ceremony. Dr. Keith Brookshaw (pictured right) was the alumni
speaker at the same event. To view his speech,
